In his long career, he has written songs pertaining to many genres, from classical or jazz to pop, lounge or even funk.
His main occupation was, however, the one of writing music for motion pictures or television series, having written for more than 500 titles. Having entered the conservatory in 1940, when he was only 12, he enrolled in a four-year harmony program, where he studied the trumpet, choral music and music composition in general.
He is one of the most musically educated film writers in history and now we are proud to have piano sheets for his songs.
He started his career in 1965, when he was part of a jazz band and he also arranged pop songs for an Italian radio service.
He changed his first jobs fast, but throughout his career, he remained a fan of pop music, composing for acts like Gianni Morandi, Edoardo Vianello, Jimmy Fontana, Rita Pavone, Gino Paoli, Rosy Armen, Demis Roussos, just to name a few. Among successful songs that Morricone worked at we remember 'Ogni Volta', performed by Paul Anka, selling over 3 million copies worldwide.
His talent was remarked and further used to create 'Se telefonando', performed by Mina, or later, when he co-wrote with 'Pet Shop Boys' for a song called 'It Couldn’t Happen Here'.

He graduated in 1954 and he started working as a ghost writer for films, writing and arranging music in the name of already big composers. In 1956 he conducted 'Morte Di Un Amico' by Mario Nascimbene and he also made music for 'Il Lieto Fine' by Luciano Salce.
